Course Objectives

What participants walk away with

Informed career planning

Intentional decisions about whether it's the right time to leave, while encouraging engagement that supports both the individual and the department.

Private-sector leadership

An introduction to executive-level thinking, expectations and decision-making frameworks used outside law enforcement.

Identity & life transition

Addressing the personal and psychological shifts that often accompany a career beyond the badge.

Curriculum

Four blocks, one day

01

The Power of LinkedIn

Building a profile that works for the career you want, not the job you have.

  • Profile photos: people judge competence in one-tenth of a second
  • Searchable headlines and an "About" section that uses the right keywords
  • Spotting fake profiles and scams that target officers
  • Live demonstration
02

Resumes & Your Brand

A resume is a marketing document, and nothing else. Its only job is to get you the interview.

  • Who is actually reading your resume, and what they know about policing
  • Getting past Applicant Tracking Systems: simple formatting, no jargon
  • Translating CJIS, operations plans, FTO programs, grants and budgets into corporate value
  • Scoring yourself against job descriptions (live demonstration)
03

Interviews & Salary Negotiation

"Tell me about yourself" isn't actually about you. Learn what employers are really asking.

  • The five most common interview questions and how to answer them
  • S.T.A.R. behavioral questions used by major employers
  • Partner exercise: "Why should we hire you?"
  • Total compensation: bonuses, stock, stipends, vehicles and more
04

Managing the Identity Shift

“It's not about losing your identity, it's about expanding it.” Led by licensed therapist Brenda Grigsby, LSCSW.

  • Why leaving is so hard: a career that feels like a calling, bonds forged through shared trauma, and the culture shock of the private sector
  • From “I matter because of what I do” to “I matter because of who I am”: finding the needs your career met and new ways to meet them
  • Purpose reconstruction vs. role replacement, and why chasing the next adrenaline job can delay adjustment
  • Cumulative stress and trauma, plus the PCL-5 self-screening tool
  • Relationships at home: conflict styles, warning signs of strain and why your spouse needs to know about the job
  • Stress blind spots, health and resilience, and why preparation should start 12–18 months before retirement
Why will a company hire you?

Not for what you did. For where you're going.

Companies hire for upward mobility. The course shows you how to present your experience as proof of what you'll do next.

Instead of "Worked patrol and special events"

Developed operations plans for events with 50,000 attendees, coordinating emergency planning across multiple agencies.

Instead of "FTO"

Oversaw a field training program for 100+ new employees and conducted operational audits across leadership levels.

Instead of "Handled CJIS data"

Safeguarded sensitive information by complying with access-control requirements and layered security protocols.
